Adolescents and Lingerie

With the way our society works nowadays, sex has become popularized through all the movies, television shows and billboard ads that constantly pound the message of sex through our brains. Additionally through biological evolution and maybe even in response to sociological pressure, young girls are reaching puberty at progressively younger ages.

What this translates to are very young girls starting to wear lingerie as well as provocative outfits. Where in previous years girls wouldn’t start doing things like that until they were well-developed at sixteen or seventeen years of age, nowadays girls start thinking about sexy, skimpy clothing and lingerie before they even hit their teen years.  To make matters even more confusing, the ever present capitalist companies have seized the opportunity to start manufacturing lingerie specifically for pre-teens!

With so many different messages out there, it is very easy for both a daughter and a mother to get confused about this issue. First of all, it is one that is difficult to talk about.  Secondly, the generation gap complicates things. How can a mother explain something is inappropriate to a daughter when that same daughter sees all of her friends doing that very thing? With things like wearing lingerie, this is a problem that many families run into.

So what should you do? Well, if you’re a mother with a daughter around that age, decide whether or not you can live with your daughter having lingerie at such a young age. Remember when you went through puberty and try to understand that it is perfectly normal for a girl to want to feel sexy during that period of her life. Talk with your daughter and discuss all the options. Above all else, remember that a little indulgence, if maintained in moderation, can be very good for her self esteem. Try to come up with a solution that both you and your daughter can live with.
